Wheelchair-bound robbery victim’s inspiring message: ‘Be kind to each other, watch out for other people’

SEATTLE — A wheelchair-bound woman with cerebral palsy who was robbed by two men at Northgate Mall says she is overwhelmed and appreciative of all the concern and support she’s gotten since the attack.

“I think people realize if these guys would target someone like me, that they would target anybody and they needed to be taken off the street,” Carolyn said.

Carolyn and her husband. who is also in wheelchair. were huddled together talking and waiting for an Access bus home to their assisted living facility on  Aug. 22 in the mall when two suspects started stalking them.

Shortly after ‘Washington’s Most Wanted’ aired the video of the two thieves stealing her Nook tablet, Seattle police arrested a 17-year-old suspect.

“It was scary when it happened and it was scary when I saw it again and it was a little bit scarier because I realized how close they were and that they were actually targeting me,” she said.

If there is one thing Carolyn wants people to know, it’s that she believes God had a hand in what happened to her. She is praying the teenager’s capture will help turn his life around.

The teen told detectives he was high and not in his right mind when he stole the tablet.

“I’m hoping that he has enough consequences that he gets held accountable and that he can see what he’s done wrong and hopefully that he will change his life around — but I can only do what I can do and he’s responsible for his own behavior,” she said Wednesday.

King County prosecutors charged the teen as a juvenile and he’s getting drug treatment in jail.

Carolyn says telling her story made her feel good that she’s standing up for herself.

“What I think people can learn is just to be more aware of your surroundings and to be kind to each other and watch out for other people and try to rise above whatever happens to you,” she said.

Her husband bought her a new Nook tablet and she says she has everything she needs.  She is grateful for everyone who offered to buy her a new one.

Carolyn does have one request though.

“What people can do for me is they can keep their eyes open for the second suspect because he’s still at large.”

If you know the identity of the suspect, seen in the surveillance video in the gray pants and black hoodie, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-tips.

A sketch of one of four suspects released by the King County Sheriff’s Office.

KING COUNTY — Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a home invasion robbery at a small marijuana grow operation where four suspects entered the house and assaulted the homeowners.

According to the King County Sheriff’s Office, officers were called at 6:10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 2nd to the 4000 block of South 272 Street in unincorporated King County near Kent with reports of a burglary.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered not a burglary, but a home invasion robbery. According to sheriff’s deputies, four black males entered the home, fired at least two guns and assaulted two people inside. The suspects fled into a car nearby.

The two victims suffered minor injuries, deputies said.

It appears the robbers were after money inside the home, which was harboring a small marijuana grow intended for personal use. The suspects did get away with a small bit of money, officers said.

A K9 track led officers to an area where it is believed the suspects got into a car and left.

Police said the home was targeted for its marijuana grow, and the general public is not at risk.

King County sheriff’s deputies are still investigating the incident.

If you can help identify the suspect or provide any additional information on the home invasion, you’re asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Christopher Robin Hood

Christopher Robin Hood

SEATTLE — Seattle police are asking for the public’s help finding Christopher Robin Hood. King County Prosecutors have charged him with a terrifying domestic violence crime.

Hood will be held on a $1 million bail when caught. Detectives say he forced his way into a woman’s apartment, covered her mouth to muffle her screams, wrapped a shirt around a handgun that he pulled out of his waistband and pointed the firearm to her head.

The victim continued struggling and knocked the shirt off the gun. He then allegedly struck her three times in the head with the butt of the gun before pointing the barrel at her head again.

Detectives say he also threatened to shoot anyone that came in the apartment in response to her screams. Hood fled the apartment when a neighbor’s dog started barking loudly.

Police say he if he is convicted he will go to prison for good because he has two prior violent felony convictions. This would be his third strike.

His prior felony convictions are tampering wth a domestic violence witness, VUCSA, assault 2, rape 3, and two counts of taking motor vehicle without permission.

He may be driving a white Chevy Malibu with WA License 411-ZXQ.

If you know where he is, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). There is cash reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to his arrest.

BOTHELL — An armed robber ordered a Hazelnut Latte before pulling a handgun and demanding all the money in the cash register last Thursday at a Bothell coffee stand.

His first hit was at Kemp’s Coffee in the 18800 block of Bothell Everett Highway in Bothell.

One week later, Snohomish County Detectives say he robbed Calling The Shots, another coffee stand just down the road from Kemp’s.

Investigators are hoping someone recognizes his face from surveillance video which shows a young Asian man approach the window and order a coffee. Then when the barista turned to make it, he backed out of the window and put on a bandana and distinct white sunglasses.

When she turned back, the suspect had his backpack on the counter and was pointing a gun at her. He gestured with the weapon to get her to hurry. She put the money in his backpack and he took off running.

“I’m guessing that he may be living in and around this area in Bothell,” said Det. Collin Ainsworth.

Det. Ainsworth thinks the gunman may have been after drug money.

“They are just going into where they think they can get in, get out, get some cash, go to their drug dealer and get the drugs that they need because what they call it is ‘dope sick,'” he said.

The armed robber is described as a young Asian man who may have escaped from the second heist on a bicycle.

If you recognize, him or can tell Det. Ainsworth anything about the suspect, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

All calls are anonymous and there is a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to his arrest.

22-year-old Tyliah Young was shot in the head multiple times. It was the first homicide of 2013 in Tacoma.

Her father reported her missing two days before she was found in an alley off S. Ainsworth Avenue near Tacoma’s Hilltop neighborhood.

Young had two daughters, ages five and seven.

“We’ve worked a couple of possible different suspects and hopefully it’s just going to take that one additional tip that gets us what we need in order to make an arrest,” said Officer Loretta Cool with Tacoma Police.

Detectives specifically want to know who she was with and what she was doing between January 5th and 13th.

“We want the public to know that this is still an active and ongoing investigation, that we have tracked down all the leads that have already come in,” Cool said. “We’re hoping that there are more out there. Robert-Pyke

TRI-CITIES, Wash. — Robert Pyke is wanted in the Tri-Cities after getting shot in the face last year and partially blinded when he decided to “beat up” someone instead of killing them.

Officers say the victim was able to reach a mini-shotgun loaded with rock salt and fired in self-defense causing Pyke’s facial injuries.

He has pending charges for Felony Unlawful Possession of a Firearm 2nd Degree and a count of Assault 2nd Degree with a Deadly Weapon.

Pyke is a high violent offender with a long criminal history in Washington, Idaho, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona. He has convictions for domestic violence assault, assault 4th degree, theft, theft 3rd degree, bail jumping, escape, criminal trespass, possession of a stolen vehicle and harassment.

Officers say he thinks he is a master of deception but in truth is a hardcore felon.

He even lied to the State of Arizona Jail in Maricopa County and managed to get booked on a new felony under his brother’s name. Pyke’s DOC Officer in Washington found out though and put a stop to his scheme.

“Over the course of three weeks, Pyke was in custody in the Maricopa County Jail in Arizona. He had the courts, the prosecutor’s office, the attorneys, the sheriff’s department, everyone convinced that it was not him, that he was his brother in an effort to try and get released,” said Ofc. Emily Isaacs with the Department of Corrections. “Obviously, it didn’t work to his favor. They ended up finding out who he was.”

If you know where Pyke is, Crime Stoppers will pay you a cash reward of up to $1,000. Call the hotline anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Jason Sumey in February 2015 (left) and December 2014 (right).

LYNNWOOD, Wash. — A convicted rapist who sexually assaulted a developmentally disabled man with the mental capacity of a 15-year-old is now facing a new Failure to Register charge after being caught thanks to tips from Washington’s Most Wanted viewers.

Jason Sumey was arrested on Friday the 13th in Lynnwood by the US Marshals Pacific NW Fugitive Apprehension Task Force.  Specific credit goes to Dept. of Corrections Officer Henry Pineda who spent months working to find Sumey.

Sumey had changed his appearance dramatically since being featured on WMW in early December of 2014.  His new booking photos show he gained weight, dyed his hair dark, grew a beard and was now wearing glasses.

His criminal history includes Rape 3rd Degree, Extortion 1st Degree, Failure to Register as a Sex Offender in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 (x2)and 2007.

King County Det. Christina Bartlett wrote in probable cause documents that “Sumey met the victim in Alaska while working at a fish cannery. Sumey began an escalating patter of fraudulent scams on the victim, which involved physical, emotional and sexual torture.”

When the victim returned to Seattle at the behest of his family, Sumey followed him as well and convinced the victim he was a Federal Marshal, even showing him a police type badge.

“Sumey demanded $7,000 from the victim because he has protected him from the mob,” wrote Det. Bartlett.

Sumey was convicted and classified a level 2 sex offender when released on December 16, 2001.

Sumey has been convicted of Failure to Register as a Sex Offender on six different occasions. He is required to sign in weekly with the King County Sheriff’s Office but had not done so since February 3, 2011.

Prosecutors have requested he be held on $30,000 bail. He will be arraigned March 2nd.

His capture is one of numerous arrests by Officer Pineda that are making Washington safer.  He was honored in June of 2013 as Washington’s Most Wanted Officer of the Month for coming in on his birthday to catch Andrew Trotman, a violent pimp accused of beating and raping a 17-year-old girl he tried to force into prostitution in Federal Way.

Officer Pineda is the first to give credit to the rest of task force members he works with but Sumey’s capture is another example of his dedication.

“I have kids. I have a daughter, and just helping out the community and making everybody safer. These guys have to be held accountable for what they do,” said Officer Pineda.

They then used the stolen credit cards to buy several hundred dollars-worth of gift cards at Target and Safeway.

RENTON, Wash. — Renton police urgently want to find a suspect accused of attacking and sexually assaulting a local barista.

Detectives say Shad Johnson waited for the woman to open at a drive through coffee stand before attacking her.

“You can imagine that this victim had what must seem like the fight of her life on her hands there,” said Renton Police Det. Robert Onishi.

Police say Johnson knew the victim and she was not a stranger.

“It escalated to the point where she was trying to close the window and he was slamming it back open and he actually dragged her out the drive through window and a prolonged fight occurred outside and then back inside the stand and went on for a considerable amount of time,” said Det. Onishi.

Johnson has an extensive criminal history and is currently on federal probation after being convicted of dealing meth.

There is a federal warrant for his arrest as well as a $300,000 nationwide warrant for Rape 1, Burglary 1 and Assault 2.

“With a person he had a relationship with for a long period of time, came within very, very little time of very seriously injuring, possibly killing her, committed a horrifying sexual assault all with this inside her workplace. All of these things, people who have some control of their faculties do not do,” said Det. Onishi.

Authorities say he may be living in his truck (similar to the one pictured above) which is a red 2004 Ford F-150 pickup with Washington plate C65064A or he could be staying with friends.

“The violence of his acts indicates potentially that if someone were to stop him or he saw someone as an impediment to his flight or if law enforcement attempted to stop him for some unrelated reason, that something bad might occur because he seems to be very, very desperate at this time,” said Det. Onishi. Johnson has a history of drinking and gambling according to investigators so he could be spotted in casinos.

He has many ties in the Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho area and in Spokane. Detectives think he could be headed to California or still be in the Renton area.

“So our worry would be now with certain things at stake, with our warrant, our charges and such that he might be more likely to commit further horrific acts in the future,” said Det. Onishi.

Murder Mystery: Pregnant mother, 2 children brutally beaten before home set ablaze

LINDA TRAN

TACOMA — It’s been almost two decades since a mother and her three children were brutally murdered inside their Tacoma home.

The details surrounding their death are horrific and their killer is still free.

Now, detectives hope someone is ready to break their silence.

“It was December 18, 1998, shortly before 8:30pm,” explains Tacoma police Det. Lindsey Wade.

On the morning of December 18, 1998, 26 year old Linda Tran was home with her 9 year old daughter Patricia and almost two year old son, Austin, when a neighbor called 911. “They reported that they saw a man with a bat, standing in the doorway of her home, and saw the man coax the children inside the house, and shut the door,” says Tacoma police Det. Lindsey Wade.

And then they witnessed the unthinkable. “They also reported hearing banging noises, glass breaking, crying inside the residence, and then while this witness was on the phone with 911, they saw the house explode,” Det. Wade said.

Linda and her two children were killed. She was also seven months pregnant.

Linda’s father, Kiet Tran, remembers the phone call. “They woke me up and said, ‘Your daughter may have been murdered.’ I was shocked and asked, why?” That is just one question that remains unanswered almost 16 years later.

Det. Wade explains, “We do not have any real strong indication as to why this happened. I think based on the brutality of the crime, it seemed like a personal crime, and somebody who would have been in a personal relationship with Linda.”

Witnesses say a man was seen running from Linda’s home after the explosion and that leaves Retired Tacoma Det. Robert Yerbury, the original lead on the case, suspecting the killer could have been covered with clues. “It’s certainly a possibility that he received some kind of burning injuries or injuries as a result of the explosion because it was so violent,” said Ret. Det. Yerbury.

The house is no longer on the corner of 40th and Q street in Tacoma, and because of advances in science since the murders police are now processing evidence for DNA. While they are waiting for results, they join Linda’s family in asking for anyone who knows what happened that night to break their silence. “It’s a horrific crime,” adds Det. Wade. “To have a pregnant woman who was seven months pregnant with a little boy that she had already named Joshua, and then her two young children who were absolutely innocent, it’s shocking, horrifying to think that something like this could happen, that it did happen and that it’s gone unsolved and that no one has come forward after all these years.”

Linda’s father explains, “After my daughter was murdered and my grandchildren were murdered, my mind can’t do much work and that slows me down because I keep thinking everyday about them, so it’s kind of tough for me to live. I can’t do any work anymore, so I need somebody out there who knows something to call Tacoma police.”

Witnesses say the man they saw that night was black or dark-skinned with a muscular build and about 30 years of age at the time.

He was seen getting into a dark-colored sedan-style car with a driver waiting for him.

If you know anything about the murders of the Tran family, call Tacoma police at (253) 798-4721.
