SEATTLE — A truck stolen from a Montana firefighter and his wife during their visit to Seattle for a fundraiser to fight cancer has been found and now Seattle police are asking for help identifying the suspect.

Shawn Ellinghouse and his wife Kirsty drove to Seattle from Seeley Lake, MT to participate in the 24th Annual Scott Firefighter Stairclimb on March 8th, an event where firefighters climb the Columbia Center stairs to raise money for the  Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

The couple stayed at a hotel in the 200 block of Aurora Avenue. Their 2007 Toyota Tundra was stolen on March 8th at 11:31 pm from the secured hotel parking garage.

At 12:54 am, the suspect wearing an argyle sweater used Kirsty’s credit card at a 7-Eleven on Queen Anne Ave N. At 2:13 am, he’s seen wearing a Denver Broncos jacket at a 7-Eleven on Nickerson Street. That jacket belongs to Kirsty.

The couple’s truck was found on March 12 parked at 1320 Mercer Street. Detectives say it also got two parking tickets at 500 N. Pontius St.

“All of our firefighter gear was in the truck, but they took my wife’s computer, wallet and other electronics. They also smoked in the truck and I believe it has some damage on the back panel,” said Ellinghouse.

He is working with the insurance company now to get it returned and repaired.

Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound is offering a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the suspect’s arrest.

If you know his name, call the hotline at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) All calls are anonymous and there is a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information to his arrest.

Shoot or not shoot? Local cop trains other officers on use of deadly force

PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. — Local police officer Gary Shilley knows firsthand about the dangers of police work.

“I was ambushed from behind the hood of a vehicle and he shot me in the face,” said Shilley.

That was in the South Hill Mall parking lot in 2006.

Now, he trains other officers on use of deadly force.  His company, Defense Essentials, uses hundreds of different video scenarios to train officers on decision-making in life or death situations.

“You killed my mom, you killed my dad,” yells a distraught teenager on one of the videos as she holds a gun to her head.

Shilley tries to talk her out of it. “You don’t need to do that, drop the gun, please drop it,” he pleads.

On the video, she takes her own life.

It’s one of the many possible endings officers might have to respond to as they practice their verbal and response skills.

“I can see what’s going on. They’re telling me to kill them. I don’t want to kill them. My objective is to stay alive. They point that gun at me, I have to use deadly force against them. I don’t want to do that,” said Shilley.

On another video, a man picks up a large rock and runs at officers, threatening them. It’s similar to what happened in Pasco recently.

“You get hit in the head with a big enough rock or a hard enough rock, it can kill you — and the officer has to think about that,” said Shilley.

That hasn’t stopped sharp criticism from the public. Shilley worries the media firestorm after every police shooting could cause officers to hesitate in dangerous situations.

“There gonna stop and second-guess themselves for a second and it may get them killed. God, I don’t want to see that. Been there, done that and it’s not a good place to be,” said Shilley.

He thinks the public and media are too quick to judge following a shooting.

“Things are being added to these events that never even happened and the public is believing what’s going on, they’re not taking into account the officer’s situation, the decision he has to make, again, in a flash of a moment and to protect his life and go home,” he said.

His goal is to give officers the keen mental awareness and tools they need when faced with a crisis.

“We`re trained to stop the threat, literally stop the threat and, hopefully, that doesn`t mean killing that person. If you end up using deadly force, it may end up being that the person dies, unfortunately, but that is not our goal,” said Shilley.

He teaches similar classes to interested civilians and even holds seminars for neighbors on use of deadly force when confronted in their homes by a burglar.

Car prowler caught on surveillance breaking into garage, stealing gun

prowler

SEATTLE — A car prowler is bad enough. But police are concerned that a car prowler in Ravenna is now armed. He stole a handgun, after finding it in a car he broke into.

Police don’t know how the prowler was able to get into the locked garage of the Ravenna apartment complex. But he’s seen on surveillance video trying the doors of several cars. Eventually he comes to a Toyota Scion that appears to be unlocked.

“I’m the type of person who locks my car 99% of the time when I get out,” says Adam Matza, the owner of the Scion. “It just happens to be a huge coincidence that he happened to be lurking around the parking lot the one time out of a hundred that I didn’t lock my car.”

The break-in happened around 4 am, while neighbors were sleeping. The crook takes his time searching through Matza’s car, eventually finding the bag that contained his 45 caliber handgun.

“Everything else he stole from the car didn’t concern me that much. There was some electronics, some medical equipment I had from my military time. But the gun was definitely the biggest thing”.

People who live in the neighborhood say hearing about car break-ins is bad enough, but this is scary.

“I’m obviously very concerned that’s someone who’s a criminal now has a gun,” says Ben Trelease.

Matza knows some people might question why he would leave his gun in his car, but he says he thought it would be safe inside the locked garage.

“I have a concealed weapons permit and I’m a responsible gun owner. But in that instance, it was just the car got broken into and it was there.”

He hopes someone will recognize the man in the surveillance video, and police are able to find him before any other crimes are committed.

“It’s dangerous for him to be out there with a gun.”

Police know the serial number of the gun, so they are keeping an eye out for it at pawn shops and online sites. If you have information that could help police, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

UPDATE: The U.S. Marshals Sex Offender Investigations Branch in Seattle says police in Utah received a call Tuesday night that Glen Feinman and Deanna Tampico who cut off their GPS trackers in Seattle were running around the Walmart in Springvi‎lle. It is the city between Nephi and Salt Lake City. They tried running from the officers but that didn’t work out either. They are now in custody on the way to be booked into Utah County Jail.

Previous story:

SEATTLE — Two convicted sex offenders who cut off their GPS bracelets in Seattle more than a week ago have now been tracked to central Utah — 900 miles from where they disappeared.

Glen Feinman, a convicted child rapist, and Deanna Tampico, a level 2 sex offender took off on April 25th.

“How these two met, it appears probably by a mutual acquaintance but they were both on DOC Supervision for similar sex crimes both against teenage girls,” said Chief Inspector Tom Lanier with the U.S. Marshals Sex Offender Investigations Branch.

The couple escaped in Feinman’s black Honda which turned up five days later in Nephi, Utah — south of Provo, Q13 FOX affiliate KSTU reported.

A neighbor called police because the car was parked with the trunk left wide open.

“The officer ran the plate, the plate had an alert on it. The owner of the vehicle having a warrant for a sex offense out of the state of Washington,” said Capt. Bert Wright with Nephi police.

Inside the car, officers found the suspects’ belongings including food, clothing and camping equipment.

We don’t know the reason they stopped in Nephi,” said Wright. “We believe they left pretty fast.”

Wright says the fugitives likely have cell phones, credit cards and possible some cash because some of the gear in the Honda appeared to be brand new.

“We don’t believe they’re still in our area however we’ve definitely slowed their travel down by taking their car,” he said.

The U.S. Marshals sex offender investigation branch in Seattle is heading up the national search for these two and says they could be anywhere by now.

“The sooner we can get these two back into custody, the safer all our communities will be.”

Glen Feinman is 33 years old, 5’10” and 133 pounds. He uses the aliases of ‘Trina Sims,’ ‘Janelle Simms’ and ‘Matt.’

SEATTLE — A couple charged in connection with a home burglary in which a dog was injured is also suspected of other break-ins around Western Washington.

Little Bernie Howe and Lisa McCambridge both have felony warrants for their arrest for identity theft after they were identified by Washington’s Most Wanted viewer tips to Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound.

King County Prosecutors have charged Howe and McCambridge with Identity Theft in the Second Degree.

The case stemmed from a burglary in Ballard on January 23rd.  Burglars kicked in the back door to a woman’s home on 7th Ave NW. Her dog was injured during the break-in. The thieves stole precious mementos as well as jewelry, small electronics, credit cards and documents.

Jane said she came home to find her back door smashed and her dog Lilo hurt.

“She got injured somehow, so the only things I can think of is that they either kicked the door and it hit her, or they kicked her at some point,” she said.

Surveillance video shows them shopping with the victim’s credit card at stores in Lynnwood, Shoreline, Edmonds and Seattle.

Howe and McCambridge are believed to be hiding somewhere in Shoreline.

Howe has a significant criminal record including multiple convictions for Residential Burglary, Theft and Possession of Stolen Property.

McCambridge has no criminal convictions but does have one recent arrest for Theft.

The state has requested $50,000 bail for Howe and $25,000 for McCambridge. The two are scheduled to be arraigned on May 11.

KING COUNTY — A former Washington’s Most Wanted fugitive on trial in King County for Domestic Violence and Child Molestation must have felt things weren’t going his way.

Prosecutors say 55-year-old Mark Shewmaker didn’t show up to court last Friday during jury deliberations and now has a $500,000 warrant for his arrest.

King County detectives say Shewmaker started molesting an 8-year-old girl in Covington in 2006 and the abuse continued until 2011. The victim told deputies that he would always ask her if she liked it.  Investigators say when her mom and step-dad were out-of-town in 2011, Shewmaker came into her room when she was sleeping and ran his finger down her face and lips and then kissed her to wake her up. She said she turned away so he wouldn’t kiss her on the lips. She said his hands started massaging her back, stomach and chest under her shirt.  She told detectives she also touched her vagina over her underwear and she rolled over. She said this abuse happened more than one time.

Shewmaker may be in the Yakima area where he has friends and family.

He has a 2005 Black Suzuki motorcycle with WA license plate #9B1265.

He was first featured on WMW on February 5, 2013. He surrendered on April 1st at the Yakima County Jail.

Ronald McKeller killing: Help Tacoma detectives solve bizarre, deadly hit and run

Ronald McKellar

Ronald McKellar

TACOMA — “This was on a really dark, rainy blustery October evening,” recalls Tacoma Det. Vicki Chittick.

The death of Ronald Mckellar is one of the more bizarre cases she’s worked.

It was just after midnight on October 4, 2008. Ron and his friend left Peewee’s Tavern on 72nd street in Tacoma after an evening of drinking. Det. Chittick says, “About 15 or 20 minutes after midnight Ronald’s friend decided he needed to leave and catch the last bus before they stop running to go home.” The two left the tavern together and started walking across the street to the bus stop. “Ronald’s friend was wearing a bright yellow rain suit and he crosses the street directly from the tavern over to the bus stop and as he reaches the curb he hears Ron call out his name. He looks back and he sees Ron approximately in the turn lane following him across the street,” Det. Chittick explains. “His back is to Ron and he hears a thud noise, and he turns around and he sees a car driving off and Ron’s gone.” Just like that, in a matter of seconds, Ron had vanished into the night almost without a trace. “He’s like, ‘What just happened and where’s my friend?'” As he looked around, he discovered Ron’s hat nearby, but still no sign of the man who was just a few feet behind him before he just disappeared.

Then — 12 blocks away — someone spotted a man lying in the middle of the road. Det. Chittick says, “Medical got a call that there was a body at 64th and C Street.”

It was Ron. He somehow got caught under a car and was dragged more than half a mile.

Police are still trying to piece together how something like this happens. Det. Chittick isn’t sure but says, “It’s a possibility that if you didn’t see him, it was dark and he was wearing dark clothing, if for some reason he stopped in the roadways and knelt down, perhaps. It’s a long way to drag something under your car, but if you were under the influence it’s possible that you might not have known. But there’s just no way of knowing until we have more information.”

There was no evidence left behind at the scene, but there was a witness who may have seen everything. A woman who heard the crash raced across the street to see if everyone was okay. Det. Chittick continues, “This person comes out, they live behind Peewee’s Tavern and they saw a grey Jeep Cherokee pull into the Rite Aid lot. Right into this area she contacts the driver who got out and describes him as being an older white male, approximately in his 50’s, who’s got gray hair and was wearing a gray jacket and jeans. She asked him if he’s alright or needed help and he said, ‘I’m not part of the accident. A car just hit a pedestrian, but we don’t have a pedestrian here so everybody’s wondering what happened.’”

The driver left before police arrived, but they would love to talk to him now. Det. Chittick says, “There was just a strange coincidence that there was no video or no employees or any witnesses during that 15 minute window. There were a lot of businesses in the area at that time, there was a pizza time here there was a movies, and the timing was that a lot of businesses closed and their employees left at midnight or people didn’t come back until 12:30am and for some reason that 15 minute window of time, just disappeared.”

Police are hoping to turn a series of bad decisions or just bad luck into answers and find out who killed Ronald Mckellar. “We’re just asking for anybody that knows anything about who that gentlemen might be or anything about the case, we just haven’t had any leads. We had a lot of tips initially, a lot of cars that people thought. There’s video at certain locations that we pulled but everybody’s vehicle that we thought was a suspected vehicle or involved turned out to be unrelated,” Det. Chittick said.

TBIRD
*Car possibly similar to suspect vehicle*
Ron’s friend described the car he saw driving away after hearing a thud as a light-colored or tan 1980s Ford Thunderbird. If you know anything about this crime or know the man who witnessed it in the gray Cherokee, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Michael Shellabarger

KING COUNTY — Police in Kent need your help finding a man who they say is not afraid to assault women.

Michael Shellabarger has a $100,000 warrant for unlawful imprisonment.

Police say he and a partner grabbed a woman in the parking lot of the “Phoenix Court Apartments” and tried to drag her into a car. The victim said the two were looking for her best friend, but before she could say anything, Shellabarger hit her, pulled her hair, even threatened to shoot her if she didn’t do as they say.

Police say Shellabarger and his partner were looking for a friend because they allegedly stole from them. Authorities say how these two handled the situation is scary. “What you also see is the desperation here,” says Jim Fuda with Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound. “It turns out they’re looking for someone for a property crime and yet they assault somebody and it escalates to where they’re assaulting police on a chase, so we need to get this guy off the street.”

A K9 officer and his K9 partner “Ghost” ended up tracking down the suspects who kept trying to get away. “Ghost” caught up with Shellabarger’s accomplice as he tried to climb a fence, who ended up kicking “Ghost” in the muzzle several times — injuring him.

Ghost’s partner arrested the man, but Shellabarger got away.

A 33-year-old man was shot in the leg upon being approached on foot by a subject who came to the scene in the white pickup truck, according to sheriff Bill Elfo. The truck had pulled up to a driveway near where the victim was working on a boat with another person.

The victim survived and was treated at St. Joseph’s Hospital and released.

REDMOND, Wash. — Redmond police say this woman is a suspect in an elder abuse case and they are hoping someone can tell them her name.

Detectives say she came into a bank branch and claimed to be the victim’s caregiver.  She helped the victim take out $2,500. She also assisted him in changing the PIN number on his debit card. There were two fraudulent  ATM withdrawals for $500 each and then purchases were made at a pharmacy and restaurant.

A credit card with a $12,500 limit was opened in the victim’s name and he told his family his wallet was missing shortly after the transactions occurred.

She told the teller her name was ‘Shanita’ but police don’t know if that’s true.

She was described as black, 5’03”, 180 pounds with a green jacket, gold necklace, black blouse and head scarf.

She may be associated with a small white car, possibly a coupe.

Detectives say his alleged victim left her phone in Chau’s car on May 30th when he dropped her off. Court documents say that when she called him, “the defendant refused to give the phone back unless the victim provided sexual services.”

Detectives say he eventually returned to her home, opened his car door and said, “What’s up” while holding the victims cell phone in his hand. When she reached to grab her phone back from him, police say he drove off and dragged her causing several cuts and bruises when she was knocked to the ground. She was holding her iPad screen at the time which was shattered.

Prosecutors say, “The defendant abused the victim’s trust as a car service driver by not only withholding her property but insisting on sexual services and later assaulting her.”

Chau’s attorney contacted police on June 11th and he was given the opportunity to surrender.

He did not, so a $100,000 warrant has been issued for his arrest.

We contacted Lyft who said Chau is no longer employed by the company. A Lyft spokesperson sent us this statement:

“We permanently removed this driver from the platform when we heard about this incident and we are cooperating with law enforcement on this matter. We take all matters involving safety extremely seriously. Our Trust and Safety team has been in touch with the passenger and we will continue to help in any way we can.”

If you know where police can find Kevin Chau, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

All calls are anonymous and there is a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to his arrest.
